Redwoods

I’ve been thinking a lot about creation and how atoms make up brilliant things like babies, gorillas, and puppies. It all seems like a miracle, really.

Yesterday I watched a Buzzfeed video that documented the strength and beauty of childbirth, and HOLY TOLEDO, I cried actual tears

A. because it was so gosh darn beautiful and

B. because the thought of a human coming out of my vagina scares me.

Sometimes I look up at the sky and wonder what is more incredible- the sun or the moon? Both bring forth light, but one does so in the midst of darkness.

Did you know Orca whales hunt best in a group, also known as a pod? They are some of the most social animals in the sea, and they even have social hierarchies, with females being at the top.

Or what about the Redwood? A tree known for its incredible size and stature, but interestingly enough, they actually have some of the shallowest roots known to mankind. The only reason they can grow so tall and strong is because their roots interweave with other Redwood trees.

And when the evil in this world seems to outweigh the good, when nowhere seems safe- not our churches, our schools, or our concert venues.

When so much feels bad and not enough feels good, I remember the resiliency of creation.

Earth is the only planet known to harbor life. It’s a planet 4.6 billion years old, which has been cut up, chopped down, and smoked out by the people it so lovingly carries. All Earth has offered is life, yet all we do is take life from it. If I were Mother Nature, I would throw up a middle finger to the world and shut off the magnetic poles.

Yet despite how awful we’ve treated this planet, Earth still holds us up in space. The perfect percentage of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon allow us to exist. Water vapor is distributed into the atmosphere to produce rain. Species thrive despite the constant threat of extinction.

Seeds take root and grow in the midst of their ashes.

All of these are masterpieces, created by a Creator who doesn’t just make bark and stone but flesh and bone.

A Guy who mixes in glory to everything He makes like an artists signature at the bottom of a canvas page.I’m thankful the same Guy who fashioned dogs and trees handmade me.

How beautiful we all must look: strong, resilient, and breathing.

You see, creation teaches us a lesson, just like the Creator meant it to be.

So today I choose to be:

as forgiving as planet earth

as strong as a woman

and as interconnected as a Redwood tree
